Skirting Does Matter
Skirting is often the last major project to go into a manufactured home installation. The sections of the home are connected, the utilities are hooked up, all the piers and support systems are installed and usually, the decks are in place as well. It seems like you are almost done, right? Skirting through is absolutely necessary end of the long process. Skirting makes your house clean warm and comfortable. Skirting matters!
What to expect
Luckily, skirting doesn’t have to be a long, cumbersome project. It can be fast, efficient, simple, and cost-effective, and maybe best of all, you can do it yourself, if you use our centervent vinyl skirting made by Variform.
We sell our skirting in either full house kits or per piece. There are only the following four components needed to skirt your home:
This is the piece that attaches to the home, using screws or nails.
This is a roughly U-shaped rail that attaches to the ground with gutter spikes.
This is a 16” wide panel, which locks together with the panels that connect to either side of it, to cover the area between the ground and your home.
This is the final piece needed to hold everything else in place. Once the panels are laid against the top back, firmly tucked into the bottom rail, and locked together with the other panels, the front rail locks into the top back rail. This sandwiches the top of the panels into place, and covers any unsightly or uneven cuts in the process!

The installation process is pretty simple in concept.
You begin by connecting the top back rail to the home, being careful not to overtighten the screws (screw slots are pre punched, and leave room for the material to expand or contract in extreme weather, as long as the screws allow for lateral movement).
Using a level, or plumb bob, or laser if you’re fancy, you spike the bottom rail into the ground, in plumb (directly below) with the top rail. In practice, being a little bit off of plumb, do to blocks or footings coming too close to the edge of the home isn’t an issue.
You cut panels to the height needed by measuring from the bottom of the bottom rail, to the middle of the top back rail. Cutting skirting panels can be accomplished in many different ways. For one time jobs, or small projects, a pair of tin snips are adequate to get the job done. For faster production, multiple panels can be cut at one time with a circular saw fitted with a many toothed blade, or abrasive blade. I’ve gotten away with using a regular framing blade on warm days! Once you have enough panels to cover twelve linear feet, you put the first one into the bottom track then slide the next one into it with the locks running down the side. Continue this process until you have twelve or more feet.
You snap/slide in the top front piece to hold it all together!
Going around corners can be a bit confusing, but I’m attaching the instructions directly from the manufacturer here. The jist of it is, the panels get a straight bend where they reach a corner, and the top front rail and bottom rail has a small wedge shaped piece cut off the top and bottom, allowing it to easily fold around the corner.
